Service Call Costs

Most licensed electricians in Maryland charge a fee to come out and diagnose the problem. At Richie Electric, electrical diagnostics start at $297. If troubleshooting the reported issue requires removing a standard outlet or switch and testing confirms that device is faulty, replacement of that one device is included. Requested replacements, upgrades, additional devices, breaker replacements and other repairs are quoted separately. Our $89 on-site estimate for larger projects is separate from diagnostics; under our existing terms it is credited toward your project if you approve the estimate within 30 days.

Additional unrelated issues or circuits require separate diagnostics, and anything beyond the included device is quoted before work begins.

Panel Work Costs in Maryland

There are two distinct services that often get grouped under “panel upgrade,” and they have different starting prices.

A panel replacement replaces your existing panel with a new one at the same amperage. This is for panels that are unsafe (Federal Pacific Stab-Lok, Zinsco), failed, or at the end of their life — not because you need more capacity. Panel upgrades start at $4,500.

A service upgrade (also called a heavy-up) increases your home's electrical service capacity — typically from 100 amps to 200 amps. This involves the panel, service entrance equipment, and utility coordination with BGE or Pepco. Service upgrades in Maryland start at $5,000. Utility charges billed directly by BGE or Pepco are separate.

In Prince George's County and Montgomery County, permits typically run $100 to $300 depending on scope. Your electrician handles the permit application, inspection scheduling, and sign-off. If someone quotes you panel work without mentioning permits, that is a red flag.

EV Charger Installation Costs

As electric vehicles become more common across Maryland, demand for Level 2 home charging stations has grown quickly. EV charger installation at Richie Electric starts at $1,570. That reflects straightforward installs where the panel has available capacity and the charger location is near the electrical room.

If your panel needs an upgrade to handle the additional load, or if a longer conduit run is needed to reach the garage or driveway, the price will increase. Final pricing depends on circuit length, installation method, panel capacity, permitting, and site conditions. Utility and local incentives vary, so check current eligibility before you buy. The federal home EV charger tax credit no longer applies to equipment placed in service after June 30, 2026.

Whole-Home Rewire Costs

Whole-home rewiring is the most comprehensive electrical project a homeowner can undertake. At Richie Electric, whole-home rewires start at $15,000. The final cost depends on the size of the home, the number of floors, wall accessibility, and the extent of the existing wiring that needs to be replaced.

Homes in Maryland with knob-and-tube wiring, aluminum branch circuits, or other outdated systems are strong candidates for a full rewire. It is the only way to fully eliminate uncertainty about the condition of hidden wiring.

What Affects the Final Price

Age of your home
Older homes in Hyattsville, Silver Spring, and Bethesda often have outdated wiring, small panels, or lack of grounding, which adds time and materials.
Wall and ceiling access
Running new wire through a finished wall takes more labor than an unfinished basement. Open walls during renovation significantly reduce labor costs.
County permit requirements
PG County and Montgomery County have different fee schedules. Permits are non-negotiable for safety and code compliance.
Distance from the panel
Longer wire runs from the panel to the work location increase material costs and labor time.
Existing electrical condition
Aluminum wiring, Federal Pacific panels, and Zinsco equipment require additional handling beyond standard work.

Why Cheapest Is Not Always Best

It is tempting to go with the lowest bid, especially when price differences are significant. But electrical work is one area where cutting corners has real consequences. An unlicensed or underqualified electrician may skip permits, use substandard materials, or leave work that fails inspection or creates a fire risk.

When you sell your home, unpermitted electrical work surfaces during the buyer's inspection and can cost far more than the original savings. Richie Electric prices competitively because, as a locally owned business, overhead is low. But every job is done right, permitted properly, and backed by real experience.
