Outlet and Switch Work in Maryland and DC
Every plug-in point in your home runs through an outlet, and every light and ceiling fan runs through a switch. When they are outdated, installed incorrectly, or simply in the wrong place, they create inconvenience at best and a hazard at worst.
Maryland and DC building codes require GFCI protection in kitchens, bathrooms, garages, outdoor areas, and anywhere within six feet of a water source. Many older homes in the DMV area still have standard two-prong or unprotected outlets in these locations, which is both a code violation and a genuine risk.
All work is permitted where required and meets current NEC and local code standards. We test every outlet and switch before we leave and clean up our work area completely.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if my outlets need to be replaced?
Outlets that are warm to the touch, discolored, scorched, or loose when plugging something in are safety hazards and should be replaced. Two-prong outlets indicate older ungrounded wiring and should be evaluated. If an outlet simply stopped working, it may be a tripped GFCI somewhere else on the circuit, a tripped breaker, or a loose wire connection.
What is a GFCI outlet and why does my home need them?
GFCI stands for ground fault circuit interrupter. These outlets monitor the flow of electricity and shut off power in milliseconds if they detect a current leak. Maryland and DC code requires GFCI protection in any location where water is present: kitchens, bathrooms, garages, outdoor outlets, laundry rooms, and unfinished basement spaces. Homes built before the late 1980s often do not have them in all required locations.
Can you add an outlet anywhere I want one?
In most cases, yes. Adding an outlet requires running new wiring to the location, which typically means opening a section of wall to route the cable. Some locations are more straightforward depending on proximity to the panel, type of construction, and what is inside the walls. We assess the specific location during a service call and give you a clear answer before any work begins.
Do I need a permit to replace outlets or add new ones?
Replacing existing outlets with the same type generally does not require a permit in Maryland or DC. Adding new outlets or circuits typically does. Richie Electric handles all permitting where required as part of the job.
What is the difference between a smart switch and a smart plug?
A smart plug sits in an existing outlet and adds remote control to whatever is plugged into it. A smart switch replaces the wall switch itself and controls the wiring directly, which is the right solution for overhead lights, ceiling fans, and anything hardwired. Smart switches require a neutral wire in most cases. We assess your existing wiring before recommending a specific switch.
